Warm Up • Copy HW • Please grab two handouts from the front desk and make them pages 16 and 17 • Please complete the preview activity on the page called The Reformation Begins
Essential Questions • How can religion impact social and political institutions? • What happens when societies are confronted with change? • How can societies use what they learn from the past?
The Reformation A movement toreformthe Catholic Church
What ideas led to the Reformation? • Humanism • Anger over the selling of indulgences- (a pardon from the Church for your sins) • The idea that only a belief in Jesus, and not the Pope, is needed to be a “Good Christian”
Desiderius Erasmus • Scholar and clergyman • Wanted to translate the Bible into the vernacular • Wrote that people needed to live good lives, not just attend religious services • People could use their reason to become better Christians
John Calvin • Reformer from France in the 1500s • Calvinism became the basis for many Protestant churches, such as the Puritans and the Presbyterians • Predestination-God has planned everyone’s life • People worked hard to prove they were among the saved • The congregation, not the kings or bishops, choose church leaders • This furthered the idea of political elections
Martin Luther • German Monk 1483-1546 • God’s salvation was a gift from God, not something to be earned by doing good work • Created the 95 Theses, or arguments against indulgences • Was excommunicated from the church
Lutheranism • Faith, not good works lead to salvation • The Bible is the final source of truth, not a church or its ministers • The church is made up of all its believers not just the clergy
Who would do that???? • Martin Luther stood up for his beliefs, even though he offended people. • What cause is worth standing up for even if it offends people?
Denomination • An organized branch of Christianity
