Cyanide!!! Skye McMillon, Alex Sellers, Jana Monkemeyer, Wayne McDonald?
Where It’s Found • Cyanides are produced by certain bacteria, fungi, and algae and are found in a number of plants. Cyanides are found, although in small amounts, in certain seeds and stones, like those of the apple, mango, and peach.
Bringin’ The Pain • Cyanide quickly enters the bloodstream. In small doses, cyanide in the body can be changed into thiocyanate, which is less harmful and is excreted in urine. In the body, cyanide in small amounts can also combine with another chemical to form vitamin B12, which helps maintain healthy nerve and red blood cells. However, large doses of cyanide prevent cells from using oxygen and eventually these cells die. The heart, respiratory system and central nervous system are most susceptible to cyanide poisoning.
Symptoms • Weakness/ Confusion • Headaches • Nausea • Difficulty breathing • Passing out • Seizures • Cardiac arrest
How It Kills You Off • Many cyanides are highly toxic. Cyanide is an inhibitor of the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase; part of the electron transport chain. It attaches to the iron within this protein and prevents transport of electrons from cytochrome c oxidase to oxygen. As a result, the electron transport chain is disrupted, meaning that the cell can no longer produce ATP for energy. Tissues that mainly depend on aerobic respiration, such as the central nervous system and the heart, are particularly devastated.
How not to die • There are these sweet kits, called Cyanokits, which contain Hydroxocobalamin. The Hydroxocobalamin binds with the cyanide to form some other compound that is hard to pronounce which can safely be excreted through your urinary tract. • This treatment is not always 100% effective. • Also, if you’re alone and passed out on the ground, you’re likely bound to die there.
Practical Usage • Mining gold and silver • Making Nylon • Illegally catching exotic fish. • It’s in the table salt you will use tonight. • Wiping out those who have wronged you.
C-C-Case Study Time • The infamous Grigori Rasputin • A Russian mystic, perceived as having influenced the theRussian Emperor Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their only son Alexei. Often called "Mad Monk“.
The Death of a Nightmare • After being stabbed by a previously bought woman of the night… • On December 16, 1916, Rusian royalty decided that Pasputni had become too powerful within their empire. The Tsarina/others led him down to the cellar, where they served him cakes and red wine laced with a massive amount of cyanide. According to legend, Rasputin was unaffected. Rasputin had developed an immunity to poison due to Mithridatism. • Rasputin was later finished off by a non-lethal gunshot to the back, but the cyanide had weakened him to the point that he died anyway.
