Coach/Advisor as Guide • Helps advisee define success • Helps advisee envision the future • Helps advisee set specific goals and how to get there • helps advisee evaluate progress • Helps advisee articulate and clarify a personal vision • Helps advisee define short-term goals that move him/her closer to a personal vision • “I will graduate with a 3.75 GPA in the Radiology program by May 2014.”
Guiding Advisees in the beginning: Needs Assessment • Questions • Does advisee have a clearly defined role as student and advisee? • Does advisee have clearly defined task? • Does advisee know what it looks like to be successful? • Does advisee have a plan to accomplish the task and fulfill responsibilities?
Advisor as Guide • Helps the advisee set goals • SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant/Realistic, Time-bound • EXACT: EXciting, Assessable, Challenging, Time-framed • Helps advisee evaluate goals • What measurements should advisee use—grades, early registration, meeting institutional deadlines • Considering measurements, help advisee figure out what is “good” (i.e., GPA of 3.5) versus what is bad (i.e., GPA of 2.4 for a nursing major)

Teaching advisees in the beginning: Needs Assessment • Does advisee possess the skills to accomplish/fulfill task/responsibility as advisee/student? • If not, can the advisee get the skills? • Does advisee possess knowledge necessary to accomplish fulfill the task/responsibility? • Many Northern students are first-time, first-generation—they may not know what they need to know and not know they don't know • Advisors help advisees distinguish between important and less relevant knowledge
Advisor as Teacher • Involves explaining a process—need to be clear and efficient • Advising is teaching because we are transferring knowledge, transferring ability to perform a task, or transforming a skill • Look for learning styles • Advising is teaching • Identify learning objectives • Measure/assesslearning

Tools of the advisor as coach • Active listening—listening at levels 4 & 5 • Questioning • Clarifying, reflecting, and using intuition • Good use of vocalics and nonverbal cues • Asking permission to address an idea or topic • Feedback
