Work in progress Madison County, KY Cemeteries Map http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=207064669688679489020.0004be6fc727e6864c47a With the modifications of street names by construction and 911 protocols, written directions in our cemetery books proved inaccurate in many cases. Digitizing cemetery locations improves this situation and makes the data available electronically.

Codecademy • An education company dedicated to applying innovations from successful Internet ventures to create a more engaging learning experience. • “We take more cues from Facebook and Zynga in creating an engaging educational experience than we do from the classroom.”
Easy Access • Multiple ways to sign up/sign in
AWESOME! • Many levels of assistance available, from hints to walk-throughs
Gamification • Per Wikipedia : “Gamification is the use of game thinking and game mechanics to engage users in solving problems. Gamification is used in applications and processes to improve user engagement, return on investment, data quality, timeliness, and learning.” • Rewards, like points and badges, leverage natural desires for achievement, competition, and closure
Does It Work? • I started Codecademy to learn CSS • I ended up creating a Blackjack game in Javascript before ever starting the CSS lesson
Program Ideas • Best Option – Open Lab • Let interested patrons flow in and out, working at their own paces • Tools • All you need to provide is a computer (platform independent) connected to the Web • This might be one of the few times I recommend a Chromebook
Program Ideas • Be there to help… or “help” • All of the answers to passing each individual lesson are in the Q & A section, meaning you can help find the answer even if you do not know much more than the question, so… • Put those reference skills to work! • Fake it ‘til you make it! • Some other phrase you find slightly motivating! • There is no reason to be frightened; it’s just a game
