  2. Stem Change Review How do you change QUERER (e-ie)? Q U E IE R E R FOLLOW THESE STEPS: • Quiero • Quieres • Quiere • Queremos • Queréis • Quieren • Remove the ending • Find the stem • Change the stem • Conjugate!

  3. How do you know when to stem change? You had to memorize a list of stem change verbs: • Querer (e-ie) • Empezar (e-ie) • Jugar (u-ue) • Pedir (e-i) • Encontrar (o-ue) • Etc…

  4. When do you preterite stem change? Stem changing in the preterite is EASY!!!! Follow these three simple rules: • You stem change only “IR” verbs. • You only stem change the “3rd” and “3rd plural” forms. • The verb will only change from “E-I” or “O-U”. • You conjugate the other forms like normal.

  19. Preterite i > y Spell Change Verbs • Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. • The ibecomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.
