  2. Description of Illness: Everyone experiences feelings of tension at some points in life, but most do not develop long-term problems with it. When this happens, it’s classified as an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is an illness that affects your personality and the way you think. It’s actually a term meaning angst &/or worry. In short, it’s a mental disorder. A person suffering from anxiety often experiences feelings of apprehension, worry, and even dread.

  3. Statistics Many people aren’t aware of this but anxiety is the most common mental illness in the U.S; it affects 40 million adults. That’s 18% of the U.S population!

  4. Signs and Symptoms • Panic Attacks • Tension • Jumpiness • Loss of Focus • Phobia (fear) • Socially inept • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder • Post-traumatic Stress

  5. Treatment There are plenty of ways to treat anxiety depending on the severities. Some people with minor cases self-treat themselves by doing things that make them happier and making more time for themselves. Moderate cases could sometimes be treated with herbal remedies and therapy. More severe cases usually require intensive therapy. These therapies can differ from cognitive therapy (examines how your negative thoughts contribute to your illness) or behavioral therapy (examines your actions and how they may trigger anxiety.)

  6. There are many ways to manage anxiety. Here are a few tips: • Distract yourself. • Exaggerate your biggest fear. • Write yourself letters. • Talk to someone.
