  3. Why use Zotero? • Collect citations rapidly • Organize research sources and files efficiently • Generate citations and bibliographies on-the-fly • Syncs data online • Share citation and build bibliographies collaboratively

  4. Installation • Do you have Firefox? http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html • Get the Zotero add-on…https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3504/ • Sign-up for an account… [recommended but optional]https://www.zotero.org/user/register

  5. Adding citations • Icon in Firefox location bar • Create item from web page • Search by identifier (DOI, ISBN, etc.) • Manually add items • Import from other tools

  6. Tips on adding citations • Select a folder in Zotero before importing • Check to see if URL was captured for example, when importing a citation from a catalog, the URL is not saved to the record • Drag-n-drop files to attach to Zotero itemuseful when you receive the article several days later via ILL

Managing Citations • Organize citations by folderNOTE: select appropriate folder before importing! • “Delete Selected Item from Library” will completely remove item • “Remove Selected Item” only removes from the folder but does not remove from top-level library • Everything that goes into a folder also goes into the top-level “My Library” • Citations sortable by columns

Inserting Citations & bibliographies • Export isn’t for creating bibliographies • Generating to clipboard works great • Zotero for Word plugin availableInsert directly from Wordnote: insert dialog window is expandable click multiple source to select multiple citationsYou must insert citations to your paper first. • At the end you can generate a bibliography

  9. Why use Mendeley? • Robust local client • Integrates with Zotero’s local database • Well-developed online sharing and socialresearchnetwork • ITunes/Picasa-like “watching” of local file folders • Organizes local files

  10. Installation • Download from http://www.mendeley.com/ • Add web importer to browser toolbar • Sign-up for account and fill-in profile
