New generation • Elizabeth Cady Stanton & S.B.Anthony die • New wave fights for suffrage state by state • Now Western & Midwestern states allow women to vote in state elections • Key player: Carrie Chapman Catt
Radical nwsm • Avtivists for women’s suffrage meet with Woodrow Wilson, who is neutral about the concept…he does not back a constitutional amendment • Women are fed up & protest outside the White House & are arrested • Key Player: Alice Paul
Finally wilson agrees • President Wilson agreed to support the suffrage movement • 1919: congress passes the 19th amendment (women & minorities can vote) • By 1920, 75% of states ratify amendment
