  2. Enhancements in Web of Knowledge databases • On Monday 11th July 2005 new versions of all Web of Knowledge Searchable Databases (with the exception of Derwent Innovations Index) were introduced. • These enhancements were as follows • The ability to display 10, 25 or 50 records on each Summary Page rather than just 10 as in the past • The ability to Sort your results set by Latest Date, Times Cited, Relevance, First Author and Source Title for up to 100,000 records in each cases as opposed to 300-500 records in the past (depending on sort field). • The ability to Save the results of the Analyze function so that they can be used with other software and the data manipulated in the way that the user wishes. • You can now accurately combine sets of results where one or more sets has more than 100,000 records. • On the Web of Knowledge page the Cross Search/External Collection option has been moved to the right of the screen to highlight it . • When you enter a database in the Web of Knowledge after the upgrade you will see a Notice as shown on the next slide.

  3. New! Choose # of records to Display! • It is now possible to choose to display more than 10 records in any Summary Display. • From a drop down menu you can chose to display 10, 25 or 50 on each page. • The number selected remains for each Summary Display until changed. • This functionality is available in all Web of Knowledge searchable databases with the exception of Derwent Innovations Index.

  4. New! Sort up to 100,000 records • In prior versions of Web of Knowledge databases it was only possible to sort on 300 – 500 records depending on the sort field you chose. • With this version you can sort on any field for up to the 100,000 records that can be displayed. • This increases functionality especially when it comes to the Analyze function. • This would also allow you to Mark the 500 most cited papers from your search results.

In Analyze you can analyze the first 2,000 records • As in the past you could not sort more than 300-500 records you would always be analyzing the latest 2,000 records. • Now that you can sort up to 100,000 records you have the ability to sort by Times Cited and then analyze the most cited papers from your set of results.

  6. For example you could sort by Times Cited and then analyze the most cited papers for your search by Institution, Author, or Country/Territory or other fields that are specific to the particular Web of Knowledge database. • The results of the Analysis can be downloaded or saved to file and then used in other software packages such as Microsoft Excel so that data may be manipulated. • In this example we are Analyzing the results of the Topic Search “SOIL SAME (NUTR* or FERTIL*) by Country/Territory and picking up the top 10 countries who have published the most cited papers in this field from the 2000 most cited papers. New! Export Analyze Data to File

  7. The Saved Data was Imported into Microsoft Excel and create chart using Microsoft Excel, in this example a Pie Chart was produced.

  8. Here the same 2000 most cited papers were Analyzed by Publication Year to see which year produced the most highly cited papers. The bar chart is produced using Create Chart feature in Microsoft Excel.
