BIOSIS Archive – coming soon! • Digitization of the historical Biological Abstracts print archive • First time to be published in electronic format • Coverage from 1926 to 1968 • Additional 3.5 million records • Majority of the records are from Journals with additional coverage from academic meetings and books • Value added abstracts • Many unique to BIOSIS • Written by respected researchers in the life sciences. Some of the authors are now renowned leaders in their respective fields of research • Because many of the original articles did no include an abstract, the BIOSIS abstracts are essential for comprehensive retrospective searching. • Value added indexing • Powerful functionality to maximize search effectiveness • Consistent throughout the entire archive
The addition of the Web Citation Index Existing Web of Knowledge coverage Open Access Journals(Open web) Traditional AcademicJournals(Closed web and print) • Repositories: • Pre-prints • Articles • Works in progress • Data logs • Technical Reports • etc. • (Open web) Additional coverage in the Web Citation Index

Web Citation index – indexing Institutional Repositories • Selected quality content • Using Thomson Scientific’s strong history of journal and web site selection policy to create a new process for evaluating IR content • Value added features and content • Using a combination of Thomson Scientific know-how and NEC’s technological expertise to index cited references • Powerful functionality of the Web of Knowledge interface • Integration with existing resources such as the Web of Science • Helping Intuitional Repository administrators promote their services • Product has been created in partnership with leading IR organizations • Create a single environment for users to search multiple forms of content • Increase the visibility and usage of IRs
Same functionality as the Web of Science. For example, sort by “Times Cited” to identify influential works
Although the Full-text is searchable the Full Record displays bibliographic data and abstract Clicking the “View Full Text” button will link to the item in the repository
Use citation navigation to expand the search:Cited ReferencesTimes CitedRelated Records
How Complete Can it (Possibly!) Be? Challenges • IRs contain immense variety of document types and formats • They are evolving in scope, content, and goals • Huge interest in the Academic/library Community – very high expectations of Web Citation Index WCI Goals for 2006 • Grow to encompass majority of IRs (over 500 identified) • Provide ability to view activity within repositories and across repositories • Complement Web of Science with additional citation relationships • Create environment for experiment and understanding of new content
Journal Use Reports – What Is It? • A new tool that combines data from a variety of sources in one location: • Web of Knowledge Usage statistics • Journal performance data from the Journal Citation Reports • Institutional publication activity (from Web of Science) • Includes citing and cited data at an institutional level • Article-level data from the Web of Science • External data sources: • Holdings data from OPAC • E-Journal usage statistics from vendors • Enables analysis in the context of the institution • Journal Performance and usage for collections evaluation • Publication activity reports analyze journal use and institutional publishing patterns • Able to create profiles to evaluate individual departments/schools
Journal Use Reports – Comprehensive View Journal record view combines journal performance data, publication activity and usage.
Journal Use Reports: Publication Activity An institutional profile lets administrators see where researchers are publishing.
Journal Use Reports: Institutional Citation Patterns …and what researchers are citing.
Journal Use Reports – Integrated Usage Indicators Shows faculty use of literature as measured by COUNTER downloads.
