Hormones are: chemicals produced by endocrine glands Able to control body parts
Hormones are specific: Only target cells have the right receptors Other body parts are unaffected
Very little hormone is produced at a time 10-12 Mol/L
Hormone production is determined by: • Internal Balance (water/salt/nutrients) • Nervous system • Other endocrine hormones
Hormone impact affected by: • Amount of production & Secretion • Blood flow to the target area • ½ life of the hormone • Hormone concentration in blood
Antagonistic hormone: Hormones with opposite actions. EX. Insulin converts sugar to fat Glucagon converts fat to sugar
Steroid hormone: Hormones composed of cholesterol. 4 carbon rings
Non-Steroid hormone: Hormones composed of protein or polypeptides or aminoacids. 2 carbon rings
Steroid hormone: • Permeable to membranes • Receptor in cytoplasm • Enters nucleus
Non-Steroid hormone: • Not Permeable to membranes • Receptor in cell membrane • ATP - cAMP
Non-Steroid hormones: • Adrenaline • LH • FSH • Anti-diuretic hormone • Adrenocorticotropic hormone
