  3. What is Climate? • Climate = the average and variations of weather over a long period of time (~30 years) Above: Global average for atmospheric water vapor.

  4. What is Weather? • Weather = all natural phenonmena within the atmosphere at a given time (hours to days)

  5. What is Science? • Science is the search for knowledge The extent of snowfall as the seasons progress from Summer into Winter and then back to Summer again. The lunar cycle

  6. How do these combine? Science is the search for knowledge • Used to understand the physics, chemistry and biology of the Earth. The Nitrogen Cycle The Water Cycle

  10. Questions to be answered… • How fast will the sea level rise? • How much warmer will it get? • When will the Arctic Ocean be ice-free? • Will the water cycle accelerate? • Are climate extremes increasing? • Will there be abrupt changes?

  12. Solutions • Maintaining ecosystem will ensure that humans and other species can remain as resilent as possible to the impacts of climate change • Reducing Global warming • Reducing Global deforestation • Curbing the clearing and burning of tropical forest.
