  1. Interoperability and Pedagogy FERL 2003 Mike Clarke and Ana Pecova The Learning and Teaching Portal Project

  2. Overview Portals Defined Why Metadata? RDN/LTSN Interoperability What do you want from a portal? The Learning and Teaching Portal Services

  3. What is a Portal? “a network service that brings together content from diverse distributed resources and collates this into an amalgamated form for presentation to the user.” How is this different to a Gateway? Gateways and hubs are web sites that provide access to descriptions of and links to other sites on the web.

  4. Why have them? • Vast amounts of high quality resources increasingly available over the internet • Need to search across many collections to discover and retrieve relevant information • Portals provide a search facility across many repositories from one location

  5. Institutional Portals • Provide a personalised, single point of access to the online resources that support members of an institution in all aspects of their learning, teaching, research and other activities

  6. So what’s the difference between a Portal and a VLE? • A VLE provides an online framework that supports the end-user in their learning activities • Typically, the VLE will provide support for the delivery of learning materials, learner assessment, collaborative tools, course registration, etc. • But may have some portal functionality

  7. Learning and Teaching Portal Service Aims • To be a means of resource discovery for learning resources and materials held in a wide variety of repositories • Support the development of communities of practice for learning and teaching • To provide a set of services to the community to enhance teaching and learning

  8. How do we search for resources? • Content can be discovered from a variety of sources • Websites • Directories • Databases

  9. Index searching For example Google Trawls the world wide web and indexes what it finds for later searching. A slight problem…….. What about the resources in databases?

  10. So, the need for metadata • Data about data • The filing room analogy • Schemas • Application profiles

  11. The RDN/LTSN interoperability project • to enable the sharing of resources across Subject Centres and RDN hubs • to make those resources more accessible for all communities who support learners through the harvesting of the collective metadata by the L&T Portal

  12. Scoping services • What does the community want from portal services? • The scenario approach.

  13. Some crystal ball gazing What sort of services would you like to see from the Learning and Teaching Portal? What sort of effect would you imagine these services will have over time and on who? What do you see as the biggest possible barriers to the success of Portal services?

  14. Portal Services • Search • Browse • Agency Database • Discussion Fora • Project Finder • Funding Opportunities Database

  15. Search service • Thin search facility running February 2004 • Searching dedicated Teaching and Learning Sites

  16. Browse • Browse will offer more specific targeted results • Search on metadata • Can be used in conjunction with search • Available June 2004

  17. Agency Mapping • Comprehensive listing of UK agencies with a learning and teaching remit • Searching possible on various parameters - Sector, educational level, discipline, region • Early 2004

  18. Community Building Fora • Ability to effectively manage discussion events • Synchronous and Asynchronous communication opportunities • Simple registration and use • Early 2004

  19. Project Finder • ‘one stop shop’ for information on national learning and teaching projects • Searches over 900 existing academic projects • Can be searched by theme, subject, institution and funding initiative • February 2004

  20. Funding Opportunities Database • Will facilitate access to opportunities for funding related to learning and teaching. • Information gathered by RSS or similar in the long term • User customisation • February 2004

  21. Progress • SSL contracted to develop infrastructure • Negotiation with agencies • Gathering information • Defining phase 2 services
