Metaphor – comparison of two unlike things NOT using like or as Ex. My life is an amusement park. Over statement – exaggeration to make a point Ex. I will NEVER talk to you again. Irony – discrepancy between what occurs and what is expected to occur Ex. A student studied all night for a test only to find out the test was cancelled. Parallelism – balance in sentences Ex. The toddler learned to crawl, to walk, and then to run. Adjectival Clause – modifies a noun or pronoun and answers what kind, how many, and which one. Ex. The red mustang that I bought yesterday is smokin’ hot. Adverbial Clause –answers the questions: when, where, why, with what result, to what extend, and under what conditions Ex. The rock star provided autographs to appease the multitude of fans. Symbolism – one object or item represent a concept or idea Ex. The bald eagle represents freedom. Imagery – words that appeal to the senses and create mental images/pictures Ex. “I watched the world float to the dark side of the moon.” Three Doors Down .
