Consider C to be the filing cabinet Consider the AAAAA’s to be the drawers Consider the items under AAAAA_Web_Clients to be the folders The files are saved inside the folders My Computer is synonymous to My Filing Cabinet
Let’s Get Organized • Organizing in Folders to save your work in • Ex – a folder for each class • Ex – a folder inside each class for each unit • Saving Files • so you can find them again • Renaming Files • so you know what they are • Linking Files to a Word Document • so others have easy access to them
Creating Folders • Open My Documents or your Flash Drive • From the File Menu, • choose New Folder • Name your Folder something Meaningful • New Folder is NOT meaningful
Saving A File • From the File Menu of your software • Choose Save As • 3 Important Items • Save In • (Where am I putting it?) • File Name • (What am I calling it?) • Save as Type • (What program can open it?)
Renaming Files • Why do this? • Example: You’ve downloaded pictures from your camera and they are named something like this: DCSF0058.JPG, DCSF0059.JPG • So what are they pictures of????????????? • Rename it to something MEANINGFUL • Example: • Rename “Colorado Teacher Performance Table-1” • to “Colorado Teacher Performance Table-YourName”
Renaming Files • Right Click on the File • Choose Rename • Enter a meaningful filename • Note: if you file extensions are showing, do NOT change those. • Ex: .JPG on these files should never be deleted or changed.
Understanding Paths • Like finding a book in a library • If you want to find a piece of information, you have to know: • Which Room it is in – or disk drive (A:\ , C:\ , D:\ , E:\) • Which shelf it is on – or folders it is in • and the name of the book – or file • If you saw the following at the library you could find the bookRoom C, Shelf 14, Book "Teddy"On a computer you would write it like this C:\Shelf14\Teddy C:\ means disk drive CShelf 14is the name of a folderTeddyis the name of a file
