The Common Application • Used by 400+ colleges and universities • Used by 6 colleges in Michigan • Lengthy application, but only needs to be filled out once for all CA schools • Create an account @ www.commonapp.org

Application Checklist • Application Type • Test Scores • Essays • Teacher Letters of Recommendation • Counselor Forms *Sending ACT or SAT scores to colleges -Students are responsible for making sure official test scores are sent to the colleges they are applying to. -If they do not send score reports to colleges at the time of testing, they will need to contact ACT/SAT and request that scores be officially sent. -For ACT, the cost is $9 per score/per school (1-2 weeks turnaround) or $13 for priority score reports (3-4 business days) *Taking multiple tests -Your Mercy transcript will show your highest score *Testing this fall -Do not wait for test scores to apply

Application Checklist • Application Type • Test Scores • Essays • Teacher Letters of Recommendation • Counselor Forms *Some colleges require letters of recommendation, some do not - If a college does not ask for a letter, they typically do not want one - Colleges who use the Common Application “do” require a teacher recommendation - Colleges that use an in-house application “may or may not” require a teacher recommendation *Choose your teacher carefully - Choose an academic teacher - Ask a teacher who knows you well, who is familiar with your most recent school work *Ask your teacher well in advance -Give him or her a minimum of 2 weeks notice

Steps students must take to request information be sent from MHS to colleges • Checklist: • Transcript Release Form • Transcript Fees • Secondary School • Report • Student Profile • Form
Student must submit a Transcript Release Form for EACH college they apply to! There is also a $4.00 Processing Fee due with EACH Transcript Release Form submitted! (Cash or check to MHS are accepted)
Many colleges will require that students print and submit the Secondary School Forms!
A Student Profile is required so that your forms and/or letters may be personalized
We began accepting Application requests (Transcripts, Secondary School Forms, etc.) on Wednesday, September 1st We need 10 working days to process an application. **Last day to submit application requests before the holiday break is Friday, December 10th .
*All Application materials should be submitted to Mrs. Burek in the Counseling Office *Applications will be processed only when received IN COMPLETION
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Information • Financial Aid makes up the difference between what college costs and what a family can afford to pay. • FAFSA is used to determine student eligibility for federal aid. • Also is used by colleges for scholarships. • Form is available online @ www.fafsa.ed.gov • Can work on the FAFSA Worksheet now. • Actual form is available in December, and can be submitted in January 2011. • OK to estimate 2010 taxes and update later.
What’s going on with PrepHQ? • PrepHQ is the Counseling Website and functions as a college planning resource to students and a database to the Counselors. • The company, ConnectEdu, that administers the site, is giving PrepHQ a major facelift. The Counseling website will look very different and will have a new name. It will be called "Connect!” • The company is still working out some of the technical bugs.
