1. PRESERVATION OF VISCERA & BODY FLUIDS IN CASE OF SUSPECTED POISONING BY- MOHD. MUNIS ANSARI

2. CIRCUMSTANCES FOR PRESERVATION The viscera & body fluids are preserved for chemical analysis under the following circumstances:
When the investigating officer requests so
When the M.O. suspects the presence of poison by its smell or in some other evidences during autopsy.
When the cause of death could not find out after a full autopsy
In decomposed bodies
In alcoholics
3. MATERIAL TO BE PRESERVED IF PATIENT IS ALIVE:
1) Vomit 300ml
2) Stomach washout 500ml
IN THE DEAD
1) Stomach whole
2) Stomach contents 300ml
3) Small intestine 100cm in adult, 200cm in chld
4) Small intestine cont 100ml
4. 5) Liver 500 gm or 5 cm thick slice
6) Spleen in adult , whole in child
7) Kidneys of both in adult & whole in child
8) Urine 100-200 ml
9) Blood 10 ml, preferably more ,100 ml
10) Vitreous as much as possible
5. The gall bladder & bile should be routinely preserved. If the gall bladder was empty at post mortem , the gall bladder itself will show the presence of a large number of drugs including morphine, cocaine & methadone
If septicaemia is suspected & the cause of it not obvious the spleen should be cultured. It may reveal an unsuspected terminal infection
6. COLLECTION & PRESERVATION BLOOD : at least 10 ml collected in a bottle preferably from peripheral site such as neck, arm & leg and also from subclavian vessels
C.S.F. : from cisternal puncture , base of brain & puncture of lateral ventricles
BONE : 200 gm , conventionaly from shaft of femer
BONE MARROW : from sternum , femer & vertebrae
MAGGOTS : they are used in forensic entomology
MUSCLES : especially thigh muscles
7. NAILS : removed from their nail bed
SKIN : a piece of 2.5 cm sq. from the affected area in case of corrosive poisoning
URINE : from suprapubic puncture or U.B.
8. PRESERVATION IN SUSPECTED POISONING The stomach & its contents, small intestine & its contents preserved in wide mouthed glass bottles.
Liver , spleen & kidney in another bottle
Blood should be sent in a vial
These bottles & vials are supplied by the office of the director , Forensic Science Laboratory(F.S.L)
In all case of poisoning inclusives of carbolic acid but exclusive of other acids , saturated solution of common salt should be used
The case of poisoning by acids is suspected except carbolic acid , rectified spirit should be used
9. The liquid blood is preserved in solution of sodium citrate in water containing formaline , for grouping purpose
In case of poisoning by alcohol : mixture of potassium oxalate & sod fluoride
In case of poisoning by oxalic acid & ethylene glycol: mixture of sod. citrate & sod fluoride
In case of poisoning by fluoride a mixture of potassium oxalate & sod nitrate
Urine in saturated solution of common salt
