Electrically Disbonding Adhesives for Orbiter EVA Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure • Description • Develop EVA friendly electrically disbonding adhesives for shuttle inspections, EVA crewmember worksite stabilization, and membrane attachment for tile and RCC repairs • Special formulations permit electrochemical reactions to occur at an interface by the application of low voltage • Epoxy based electrically disbonding adhesives are commercially available and have been in use by the Air Force • Project is a high temperature version designed for use on orbit and Space Station • Technologies and Capabilities • The adhesives are suitable for -250 °F to 250 °F • Low out gassing(<1%), VCM < 0.1% • Good adhesive strength to tile, RCC, blankets, and FRSI • Rapidly, easily and cleanly separates from a substrate by applying typically 10-50 volt DC Voltage and a current of 5mA/sq.cm • Remove attachments placed on the Orbiter for advanced EVA operations • Adhesive application technique is EVA-friendly and gentle to the remaining TPS • Proven technology and passed flight worthiness testing by the Air Force Benefits and Impacts Obsolescence Reduction Risk Reduction Safety Improvement Cost Reduction Process Improvement Other (Ultra-High Operations Improvement Reliability) Performance Enhancement • POC, Cost, Schedule and Maturity • TRL: 3 • POC: Ruth H. Pater, LaRC, 757-864-4277 • Critically important for worksite stabilization and tile and RCC repairs • Significant improvements in safety, operations, and performance. • Reduction in Category 1 Failure Rate of 1.0%
