A snap shot of Certified Builders • Certified Builders Association was established in 1997 • To be able to join – minimum standard of being “Trade Qualified” • Membership is spread across the country • Our member numbers are growing (despite the economic downturn) • National Board, 22 Local Regions, National Support (Tauranga based) www.certified.co.nz
Carpenters Skill Development....Over the years • Little or minimal ‘business based’ development undertaken • Primarily driven by product manufacturers (product changes) • Mostly of a technical or product nature • Is the Licensed Building Practitioner framework a game changer? www.certified.co.nz
Strategic Objectives Regulatory Framework Assist all members to adjust to the new Licensed Building Practitioner regulatory framework Membership Services Expand the support services provided to members to include both building and business support services www.certified.co.nz
Trade Training and Education - Activity • National education program underway • Nationwide – 80 events per year (min) • Open to all – not only Certified Builders Association members • Open to all trades • Many signs of non carpentry trades regularly attending • Collaboration between trades is only at a local level currently www.certified.co.nz
Trade Training and Education - Content • Strategy is to have a mix of content but focus on ‘business skills’ – both on and off site • Qualification for LBP – Skills Maintenance Points • Current changes in industry have high jacked this a little? • Working From Heights • Licensing consultation • LBP - Skills Maintenance Review etc www.certified.co.nz
Skill Development- Content challenges • Low numeracy and literacy skills of the industry • Lack of defined pathway to grow business • Visual learners • Physical nature of work – attention spans • Aging work force • Emerging multi cultural workers www.certified.co.nz
Skill Development- The upsides • Willingness to learn • New generation – tech savy and hungry for knowledge • Simple, intuitive technology continually emerging • Forecast economic and activity growth • Summary: • Just the task of lifting the professionalism of an industry www.certified.co.nz
