Middle Ages – very strong religion (mainly CATHOLICISM) Leading into the • Renaissance= REBIRTH OF THE ARTS (MUSIC, PAINTING, LITERATURE, SPORTS, ETC.) • Humanism – the study of classical texts (GREEK & ROMAN) in conjunction with RELIGION. • Aim was to STRENGTHEN CHRISTIANITY THROUGH THE CLASSICS as well as ATTAIN VIRTUE. • Three Questions asked by Humanists? • What IS A HUMAN BEING? • What IS A GOOD LIFE? • How DO YOU LEAD A GOOD LIFE?

Sir Thomas More Led the Humanist movement in ITALY Led the Humanist movement in ENGLAND Both believed in RELIGION + CLASSICS Had a great influence over King Henry VIII – a great humanist • This belief was illustrated (very literally) in paintings/artwork that had religious overtones.
