  3. Why?? • Over demanding patients, with unrealistic expectations • Keeping up to date • Unscheduled care • Practice management • Juggling lots of responsibilities • Diminishing income with higher targets • Constantly changing practices • Revalidation

  4. Those most at risk • Those in group practices • Those who always see the same patient • Male • Those registered with GMC <20 years

What is Burnout • “An experience of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion, caused by long term involvement in situations that are emotionally demanding” • “Is the index of dislocation between what people are and what they have to do. It represents an erosion in values, dignity, spirit, and will and erosion of the human soul”

Symptoms of Burnout syndrome • Poor concentration • Insomnia • Poor productivity and more mistakes • Guilt • Denial • Loss of libido • Depression This may be followed by: • Becoming uncooperative and resistant to change • Resentment • Frustrated, bored • Feeling isolated • Paranoia • Irritability • Aggressiveness, short temper This may progress yet further to: • Poor timekeeping • Indecision • Avoidance behaviour • Apathy • Amnesia • Withdrawn • Alcoholism, drug dependence or other inappropriate behaviour

Prevention • How can we prevent burnout? • How can we continue to see the many changes we face as an opportunity rather than a threat? • How can we ascertain that we face each day with vitality and excitement rather than yearning for the day when our superannuation contributions will summate to a satisfactory pension? • What is the secret of eternal youth?

Suggestions • PDP • Specialist interests • Trainer • Delegate • Know your personal limits • Say “no” • Don’t neglect family • Interests outside of medicine • Look for practice with harmonious relationship • Physical activity • Have boundaries between home and work • Evolve • Book holidays well in advance
