Young people who read have improved spelling. They excel in academics, and are better readers. They are better prepared for college.
Reading and Illiteracy • The benefits of reading out weigh illiteracy. • Adults and children who read have higher confidence. • Reading provides a competitive edge in the business world. • Verses: • The disadvantages of illiteracy. • Low self-esteem. • Poor economic situations in the business world.
Problems with illiteracy • Low illiteracy costs the U.S over $73 million in healthcare a year. • Illiteracy and crime are closely related. • 90% of welfare recipients are high school drop outs. • 3 out of 4 food stamp recipients are perform the lowest in illiteracy. • Americans will not be able to keep up with the cost of illiteracy.
Reading is Power • Start Reading 20 minutes a day now. • Visit your local library. • Turn off the T.V. • Volunteer to teach illiterate adults and children to read.
