  1. Astronomical Exploration (1969-1972) By: Kaitlyn Hazelett

  2. Apollo 11 • First mission to land person on moon • Crew • Neil Armstrong • Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin • Michael Collins • July 16th, 1969 • Many watched as Armstrong walked • Buzz- second many to walk on moon • Photographs, experiments, samples • July 24th • President Kennedy • Greatest technological achievement of all time

  3. Apollo 13 • April 11th, 1970 • Crew • James Lovell • John Swigert • Fred Haise • Third lunar landing • Explosion in oxygen tank • Stranded 200,000 miles from Earth • NASA found a way to get them back to Earth safety and alive

  4. Venera 7 • August 1970 • Two identical space crafts sent to Venus • Goals of mission: • Land on planet • Receive data on atmosphere of Venus • Return with more data • First mission to travel and land on another planet

  5. Luna 16 • Goal: • Land on moon and collect samples of the surface • Not the first time this had been done • Apollo 11/12 • September 24th, 1970 • Completed

  6. Luna 17 • Similar to Luna 16 • Differences: • Instead of returning samples, used as a rover to return photographs of the moon to the Earth • Lunokhod • Stationed 11 months

  7. Salyut 1 • Purpose: • Test elements of a space station • Conduct research/experiments • April 19th, 1971 • First space center sent into orbit • 362 orbits • Returned, landing in the Pacific Ocean • October • Long, duration of space travel on human body

  8. First Occupation of Space Station • June 6th, 1971 • Soyuz 11 • G.T. Dobrovolsky • V.N. Volkov • V.I. Patsayev • First man occupied orbital space center • June 29 during re-entry • All died

  9. Lunar rover mission • LRV • Apollo 11-15 missions • Explore more terrain on moon surface • Allowed two astronauts to travel around surface while spending their time there

  10. Mariner 9 • Traveled to Mars • Studied temporal changes in atmosphere/Martian surface • Map the surface of Mars • Mariner 8 • First space craft to orbit anther planet

  11. Apollo 17 • 1972 • Last Apollo mission • Land on moon • Harrison Schmitt • Only geologist trained to go • Used the LVR to travel most distance on surface • Eugene Cernan became the last man to walk on moon

  12. Cygnus X-1 • Well known galactic x-ray source • Black hole candidate • Strongest x-ray source seen by Earth • Lack of direct observation on • Many hypothesis’ were hard to make because of this • Most studied astronomical object in its class • Found in 1972
