Donation and transplantation is an accepted therapeutic option for organ failure or tissue replacement to save or improve quality of life However, medical schools do not consider this subject as part as their curriculums PIERDUB Educational Training program in organ donation and transplantation for pre-graduate medical students

  3. Launched in 2007 Faculty of Medicine UB Board of Donation and Transplantation within the Surgical Department Optional subject 4.5 academic credits 21 Faculty & experts involved Students from 4th- 6th year Educational Training program in Organ & Tissue Donation

  4. Step I: Education UB Medical Students “Train the trainers” Dissemination: Health Sciences and other faculties aside UB Step II: University Networking Catalonia, Spain and Europe Step III: Research Survey to evaluate level of knowledge and attitude toward donation

  5. Step I: Education UB Train the Trainers Provide knowledge about organ Donation and Transplantation Develop communication skills Design and implement an action plan to promote & broadcast organ donation among other university students

  6. Biology 17 disciplines Architecture, Law, Economics & Business, Mathematics, Philology, Philosophy, History Psychology, Pedagogy, Communication Medicine, Nursing, Biology, Pharmacy

Step I: Education UB University Donation and Transplantation Day III Editions since 2008. • Basic knowledge: • Donation process • Brain Death • Breaking bad news • Testimonies: • Donor relatives • Living donors • Recipients • Health Professionals 10 academic hours 211 students from many disciplines :Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biology, Psychology, Nursing, History and Philosophy attended.

  8. Dissemination of Knowledge in organ donation and transplantation among medical students around the world Step II: University Networking ERASMUS project that enhances professionals mobility in Europe

  9. Step III: Research • The Survey • Evaluate the level of knowledge and attitude towards organ donation among pre-graduate students. • Analyse results and correlation s of different facts: age, gender, origin and religious beliefs. Up to date 2016 surveys have been collected

  13. Next steps • Continuity of the training program UB Medical School • Develop a Inter-university Network • Survey Research and analysis • Evaluate results and impact in improving donation awareness

  14. Conclusions • Strengthen and enhance development of organ donation • Nurtures a positive attitude towards donation among medical students • Improve quality of medical curriculum programs • Develop a trainers role for future professionals to help improving donation rates
