Parliamentary functions • Represents the interests of the EU´s citizens. • Oversees implementation of the EU budget jointly with the Council of the EU. • Monitors the activities of the EU commission. • Elects the Europan Ombudsman, who investigates citizens. • Parliamentary committees monitor Union policies on a continuous basis.

Parliamentary Organisation • President elected for a renewable term of a 2 years. • President oversees the work of parliament & represents the parliament externally • No. Of MEPs per country depends on population with max of 96 & min of 6. • 20 parliamentary standing comittes each with a chairman, vice-chairman & a secretariat. • A secretariat of approx, 5000 civil servants.

  4. Parliamentary Powers • Shares power to legislate with the council of the EU. • Aproves the eu budget jointly with the council of the EU. • Aproves the appointment of the European Commission. • Has the power to dismiss the Commission.
