Tillman’s Stance on Race • Did NOT look out for the rights of African Americans • He supported Jim Crow laws, poll taxes and literacy tests.
Tillman’s Contributions • Was instrumental in the founding of Clemson and Winthrop Universities in SC (land-grant colleges) • Clemson was created as an Agricultural School. • Helped write the State Constitution of 1895
SC Constitution of 1895 • Written with support of Tillman • Allowed for segregation in schools and public places. • Disenfranchised African Americans by adding stricter voting laws • Outlawed divorce, gambling, and lotteries.
Dispensary • Temperance- limiting or prohibiting of alcohol. • Dispensary- system of liquor control, only sold in state stores. • Unpopular and caused riots.
