  2. Benjamin “Pitchfork” Tillman • Populist leader- elected governor in 1890, also SC Senator • Criticized the Conservatives for being corrupt. • He aimed to help the “little man” small farmers.

  3. Tillman’s Stance on Race • Did NOT look out for the rights of African Americans • He supported Jim Crow laws, poll taxes and literacy tests.

  4. Tillman’s Contributions • Was instrumental in the founding of Clemson and Winthrop Universities in SC (land-grant colleges) • Clemson was created as an Agricultural School. • Helped write the State Constitution of 1895

  5. SC Constitution of 1895 • Written with support of Tillman • Allowed for segregation in schools and public places. • Disenfranchised African Americans by adding stricter voting laws • Outlawed divorce, gambling, and lotteries.

  6. Dispensary • Temperance- limiting or prohibiting of alcohol. • Dispensary- system of liquor control, only sold in state stores. • Unpopular and caused riots.
