single and accompanying video garnered world wide attention • straight to number 1 on the charts where it stayed for many weeks • Sold more than 6 million copies and $8 million across the globe • (LIVE8LIVE, N.D.). • Inspired hits from other countries including ‘we are the world’ (usa) and ‘tears are not enough’ (Canada) which also raised millions of dollars for famine relief (MTV news, 2013).
Geldof then staged a huge concert in 1985 called live Aid, held simultaneously at WembleyStadium in London (72,000 people) AND JOHN F. KENNEDY STADIUM IN PHILADELPHIA (100,000 PEOPLE). AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHER COUNTRIES, raising over $110 million worldwide (bbc news, 1985)
Band aid ii re-recorded THE SINGLE ‘DO THEY KNOW IT’S CHRISTMAS’ in 1989 WITH FAMOUS ARTISTS OF THE TIME • AGAIN IN 2004 THE SONG WAS RECORDED BY NEW ARTISTS TO raisEfunds for famine relief, SELLING 1.17 million copies(MTV NEWS, 2013). • FURTHER live8 CONCERTs were HELD IN JULY 2005 that were not intended to fundraise but to raise awareness of African problems including government debt, trade barriers, hunger and AIDS (the sofii foundation, 2010).
