What is the origin of Fairy Tales? The Little Red Riding Hood • Fairy tales are folk tales which have been orally transmitted through generations. Fairy tales are well known as stories about magic, fantasy, witches, queens, princes, princesses, giants and even fairies. However, some fairy tales came from real experiences. Fairy tales can be magical and also violent because fairy tales start with conflict as humanity does. • Fairy tales were introduced to the people who lived at the King’s court to pass good messages and promote good behavior. Charles Perrault collected fairy tales such as Cinderella, The Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, among others, in France (1697).
Continue… • Love for family plays an important role in fairy tales. Some of the Grimm’s stories assert that some fairy tales are about family dysfunction and how society contributed to that, such as the story of “The Fisherman and His Wife.” • Fairy tales also represent stories about religious devotion and social strive such as the story of Rumpelstiltskin. In the story before the queen guessed his name, she mentioned the three wise men Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar. Rumpelstiltskin
What is fantasy? Fantasy are stories about extraordinary events, journeys, and quest that does not happen in reality. Fantasy enables us to believe the existence of magical places abundant with magical creatures like dragons or fairies because fantasy is the land of make believe. Through fantasy, we make connections with real events. Fantasy also helps us to overcome problems or complicated situations.

What are the most popular Fairy Tales? There are many popular fairy tales and the very well known are: The story is about a lonely little bird born in a barnyard who suffers abuse from the others until one day to his surprise the little bird became a beautiful swan, the most beautiful bird of all. The story is about three little pigs who had to deal with a big bad wolf. In the story the pigs also learned the importance of being hard workers. Modeling the example of his big brother who built a strong house that protected them from the wolf. The story is about a girl who was locked in a tower since she was a baby by an old lady, after her father stole a vegetable from her garden. The story is about a girl who was mistreated by her step-mother and step-sisters. At the end, after too much suffering, the girl finds her happiness.
Continue… Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Arthur Rackham A miller tells the King that his daughter can turn straw into gold. The girl is taken to the castle to turn straw into gold and knowing that is not possible she cries, until an imp-like creature appeared and helped her. The creature demanded her to give him her first child in order to help her, and she accepted the offer. The story is about three bears living in the woods. One is small, one medium size and the other is a huge bear. When the bears went out for a walk, a girl got into the bear’s house. The bears found the girl and she ran away as fast as she could. The story is about two siblings who are left alone in the forest by their father after their step-mother’s requested. All by themselves, they met a witch who was living in a candy house. They defeated the witch and they reunited again with their father.
Continue… The story is about a King who has twelve princesses. Every day their dancing shoes are found to be worn through as if they had been dancing all night. The King asks his kingdom to help him find out what are his daughters doing. The story is about a merchant who trades his daughter for his life to a Beast that lives in a castle. The girl and the Beast became friends and their true love for each other, breaks the Beast’s cursed. They get married and live happily ever after. The story is about the adventures of Pinocchio. When a carpenter gives a talking piece of wood to his neighbor Geppetto, he then carved the wood into a marionette and named him Pinocchio. Later on, Pinocchio turned into a real boy.
Do all cultures have Fairy Tales? Every culture has their own folk tales or fairy tales. Cinderella has 13 versions, and each story is different but with the same message of getting a happy ending. Fairy tales from other cultures helps children to understand diversity and be aware that princesses are not necessarily blonde, beautiful or slim. Anyone can be a princess, and more importantly, you do not need to be royalty or have a castle to be one. You just have to believe you are one!
Are Fairy Tales and Fantasy Interesting to adults? Fairy tales are part of our reading experience and they were not originally created for children. Most of the Disney versions of fairytales have been modified to be more family friendly. Fairy tales are stories that although we do not totally understand, we know it contains good and evil with lots of surprises, conflicts, struggles and happiness. Somehow fairytales teach us perseverance, optimism, and courage. Original version Disney version
Continue… Fantasy also gives us the ability to explore our imagination and the possibility to create incredible places. Fantasy lets us experience extraordinary stories that can help us to have a break from stress.
How are fairy tales introduce in children’s literature? • Fairy tales are stories that entertain children and let them flourish their imagination. They also offer good lessons through their stories that children can learn. • Cinderella teaches children to be kind even when other mistreat us. Cinderella was mistreated by her family, but she stayed kind and thoughtful. • Rapunzel, helps children think critically and look for solutions. Children can use the tools they may already have and succeed, just like Rapunzel did. • Little Red Riding Hood, children can learn the importance of being obedient and careful with strangers.
Continue… • Three Little Pigs, teaches children the importance of building on a strong foundation. In this tale, the pigs learned that the house made of bricks protected them from the hungry wolf. • The Little Mermaid,motives children to try new things and get out of their comfort zone. How do teachers use fairy tales in lesson’s plans? ART: The Three Little Pigs Make the houses of the Three Little Pigs by gluing on raffia pieces (straw), toothpicks (sticks), and small rectangles of red foam (bricks). Talk about the sequence of the story and make the houses on the paper in that sequence. The children dictate a few sentences to retell the story. Gold Crowns Make crowns out of plain construction paper. Paint them with gold glitter paint, and add some sequins for “jewels”.

Why Fairy tales and Fantasy? • Fairy tales and Fantasy is a topic that attracts the attention of children and adults. Even though they are not real events, we enjoy them. • Although some people consider Fairy tales inappropriate for children because they may influence them to become something they are not, fairy tales helps us to understand the difference between reality and fantasy. • Even though fairy tales have good and evil, there is not a reason to stop passing it to our children. Through their stories, a child can identify the difference between becoming a hero or an evil character. The stories come with messages that can benefit children to understand consequences.
Continue… • Fairy tales also nurture children’s imagination which is something that children need. • Fairy tales invite children to imagine and daydream because they speak to children in the language of symbols. Fairy tales also can help children to solve struggles and find solutions. Through the stories shows that justice always reigns and being evil have consequences. • Some fairy tales start with the death of someone which helps children that grieving is part of life. • Fairy tales are part of us since we have learned about them since childhood till adulthood. Fairy tales give us hope, something to believe. We all want a little of magic in our lives with happy endings.
