What is BMI? • Body mass index (BMI) is the most common method of determining whether a persons weight fits into a healthy range. It is calculated by dividing their weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared (BMI= KG/M²)
Being overweight/underweight • Underweight is defined as a BMI of less then 18.5 • Overweight is defined as a BMI of 25 or over • Obese is defined as a BMI of 30 or over • Problems with body weight, particularly being overweight and obese, contribute to a wide range of future health problems for young people.
Negative affects • Being overweight is likely to negatively affect a young persons social and emotional well being • It also increases the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes • A lack of physical activity and poor eating habits are mostly linked with obesity and being overweight
Body image • Body image refers to the attitude or feelings we have about our body and the way we look or the way we think others see us. A persons body image can be either positive or negative • Excursing daily or consistently along with a healthy well balanced diet, helps keep you fit and healthy, this will help keep a happy body image of yourself
