  1. French Colony Michael, Asia, India

Driven by the desire to protect the missionaries and to gain control in the area, the French began to attack Vietnam in 1858 under the orders of Napoleon III of France, heralded the beginning of the colonial occupation in Vietnam. However, it was not until 1887 that the French really took an active role after conquering Vietnam completely. They allowed Vietnam's emperors to continue to reign, although not actually rule. They main duty was to by a “figurehead”. Vietnam became part of French Indochina, along with Cambodia and Laos. The French divided Vietnam into three distinct regions—Tonkin in the north, An Nam in the center, and Cochin China in the south.

Revolt and Rebellions • Anti French rebellions frequent. • Traditionalist and Nationalist rebellions in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. • The 1911 Chinese revolution inspired Nationalists to create a democratic republic. • 1927: VIETNAM QUAC DAN DANG. Nationalists who organized protests and assassinations. They were arrested. • Communists then created the INDO CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY. They gained seats on the Saigon and Colonial Council.

Ho Chi Minh • Born: 19/5/1890 in Nghe Ah Province, Central Vietnam. • Raised in nationalism, did anti French projects. • Mastered French, English, Russian and Chinese. • Travelled to England, Africa and possibly USA. • Was arrested, sentenced to death in China but escaped to the Soviet Union. • Spent 6 years with the French Communist Party. • Spoke at Versailles for Vietnamese independence and criticized French colonialism. • Established the Indochina communist Party in 1930. • Created the Viet Minh in 1941 • Formed a massive nationalist movement which turned communist. They defeated the French in 1954.

Japanese Occupation • 1940- Nazi Germans move into France, Japan prepare to move into French Indo-China • Indo China seen as stepping stone into the rest of South East Asia • Brief Bloody Battle between French and Japanese troops- Governor General Georges Cat roux resigns • French Officials still allowed to run country • 1941 Viet Minh (Vietnamese nationalists) declare full struggle against France and Japan • Had support from Chiang Kai Shek and Chinese nationalists. • The Viet Minh were 10,000 guerrilla soldiers strong. • No major operation against Japan until 1945 when Japan suddenly siezed control. • Japanese proclaimed Vietnam independent with the emperor Bao Dai. • French Rule ended in Indochina for the first time since the 19th century.
