  2. Launch Lab • Answer #4 in your copybook. • Skim through p. 464-466. • How does this activity relate to our new chapter?

  3. Read p. 464-466 • Take notes if you haven’t already

  4. Review: What are electrons? Where are they? In a neutral Carbon atom – how many electrons are there?

  5. Electron Arrangement • Energy levels – different positions for an electron in an atom • Further levels hold more electrons: • 1st level = 2 • 2nd level = 8 • 3rd level = 18 • 4th level = 32

  6. Which electron as the most energy? Which electron has the least amount of energy? Which electron is easiest to remove?

  7. Create Energy Levels for: Hydrogen Lithium Boron Carbon Nitrogen Oxygen Flourine Neon

  8. What pattern do you notice? • Look at the shortened periodic table on p. 467: • What patterns do you notice? • What do different groups have in common?

  10. Halogens Need 1 electron to obtain stable outer layer Flourine = most reactive because outer layer is closest to nucleus Reactivity decreases down the group

  11. Alkali Metals 1 electron in outer energy level This is the electron removed during a reaction Less energy is needed to remove this electron Reactivity increases down a group
