Background • Was mainly written for Jewish-Christians who were expelled from synagogues after Roman revolt. • Written Between AD 90 and 100. • Evangelists other reasons for writing the Gospel: • Combat false ideas about Jesus’ full humanity. • To oppose the followers of John the Baptist that thought John was the Messiah instead of Jesus. • To strengthen faith and to win converts.

  4. Themes of the Gospel • Theme 1: Christology from above • Christology is the study of Jesus Christ, trying to understand who he is. • Focus of this gospel is on Jesus’ heavenly origins, his identity as the Son of God, and his preexistence as the word of God. • Theme 2: Major Conflicts • The light of Christ versus the darkness of the world that refuses to believe in Jesus. • Life giving faith in Jesus that makes us the children of God versus unbelief. • Truth versus untruth. • Theme 3: Who is Jesus? • John identifies Jesus’ true role: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”(1:29), “He is the Son of God”(1:34).

Signs 1 and 2 • Sign 1: Changing Water into Wine • Natural miracle. • Performed at a Wedding in Cana. • Mary’s role in miracle is being the perfect model of faith. • Jesus also represents the richness of the wisdom he brings from God. • Helps the disciples believe in him. • Sign 2: Cure of Official’s Son • Also occurs in Cana. • Shows that faith promotes Jesus to act. • Proves that the Lord will notice and respond to our concern for others.

Signs 3, 4, and 5 • Sign 3: Cure of the Paralytic at the Pool • Shows that Jesus is the source of life. • Jesus claims to be equal to God. • Also, throughout this passage, John uses the term Jews in a hostile way. • Signs 4 and 5: The Feeding of the 5,000 and Walking on Water • These signs parallel to the exodus miracles of the manna in the desert and the parting of the Red Sea. • Jesus teaches the necessity of eating the flesh of his body and drinking his blood (Eucharist). • Jesus walking on water reveals that he is truly God’s Holy One. • Shows that Jesus, God himself, is with us and will never leave us.

Signs 6 and 7 • Sign 6: Cure of a blind man • Pool of Siloam- pool of water outside of Jerusalem that is a receptacle for the waters of the Gihon Spring. • Contrasts a blind man who was given sight and those who had sight yet were spiritually blind. • Shows that his light gives us direction and overcomes the darkness of sin. • Sign 7: The Raising of Lazarus • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0M7vvX6__M • Prefigures Jesus’ own death and resurrection. • Causes many to believe in Jesus. • Sums up all other signs. • Shows Jesus’ power over life and death.

  8. Jesus’ Last Supper Happens Day before execution, which is the day that Jews killed their lambs for their Passover meal. So here, Jesus really is already sacrificing himself, he is the “LAMB of God”. Occurs a day earlier than reported in the Synoptics.

  9. The Resurrection Of Jesus Is a major revelation of God the father. John’s Gospel reports that Jesus first appeared to Mary. Glory of God- The visible revelation of the power of the invisible God.

  10. Why this Gospel is unique • John’s Gospel is rather different from the other three: • Focus is on the signs of Jesus’ identity and his mission. • “John begins with the profound announcement that Jesus is the “in the beginning” creative Word of God who had become embodied (incarnated) as a human being to be the light of life for the world. After this comes the proclamation that this Jesus is the Son of God sent from the Father to finish the Father’s work in the world”(Zondervan). • “In any event, his witness to Jesus goes its own way, highlighting matters that in the other Gospels remain implicit and underdeveloped”(Zondervan).
