The Four Killings 1016 Thurbrand ambushes Uhtred at the court of Cnut. 1020s? Uhtred’s son Ealdred kills Thurbrand (unknown circumstances). 1038 Thurbrand’s son Carl kills Ealdred, his guest, after making peace, swearing blood-brotherhood and attempting to make a joint pilgrimage to Rome. 1073/4 Ealdred’s grandson Earl Waltheof surprises and massacres sons and grandsons of Carl during a feast; his men depart with much booty.
