  3. Using clues A fossil is a part or imprint of something that was once alive. Artifacts are created by and used by humans. A primary source is an account of an event created by someone who took part in or witnessed the event. A secondary source is information gathered by someone who did not take part in or witness the event.

  7. What makes something a Secondary source? A secondary source is information gathered by someone who did not take part in or witness the event. SUMMARY—It is important to study the past. We learn about how others lived by studying what they left behind. We not only come to understand others, but also ourselves and our world. We follow the clues of fossils and artifacts. We use the information of those who were there and those who gather information about those who were there. We review and reanalyze information and come to our own conclusions.
