  3. 3 Types of governments Autocratic, Oligarchic, and Democratic Who rules and who participates? Who governs and what is the citizen participation?

  4. 3 Types of Governments: Autocratic (sometimes called a Monarchy) • Government in which the power is held by one person • Generally the power to rule is inherited or taken by military force • 3 types of autocratic governments • Dictatorship: form of government where political authority is often described as monopolized by a single person or a political system • Absolute Monarchy: form of government in which the monarch has absolute power among his or her people • Constitutional Monarchy: a form of government in which a king or queen acts as Head of State. The ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament, not with the Monarch.

  5. 3 Types of Government: Oligarchic • A government is which a few people (dominant clan or clique) have power • Get their power from military force, wealth, or social status • Elections may be held, but only one candidate is offered

  6. 3 Types of Government: Democratic • Government is “ruled by the people” • Individual freedom and equality is valued • Free elections • Majority rules in decision making • Candidates express their views freely • Citizens vote by secret ballot

Federal Democracy • Splits power between independent states and a central government (Rights for states, Rights for National Government) • Each gets its power from a written authority (US Constitution) • Independent branches inside the central government may also share power (EJL) • Example: USA

  11. Confederal (Confederation)

Confederation Democracy • Alliance between individual states • There is a central government, but the states usually give it very little power • Power is in the individual states • Representatives from those states come together to solve any problems, needs, etc. • Example: Confederate States of America

Unitary Democracy • All the power rests with the central government • The country may be divided into states or sections, but they have no power • Example: England • England depends on Parliament to be the enforcer and creator of laws • Prime Minister (leader of the country) has no more power than the members of Parliament
