Bowie counselors • 10th-12th counselors have approx. 520 students • Students can drop in before school/after school/lunches/off periods/anytime in an emergency • Parents- please call 0r e-mail to make appt. • What do we do? • Academic advising and scheduling • Individual counseling • Classroom guidance lessons • Parent presentations • Post –secondary planning and advising • Consultation/collaboration with teachers, parents, administrators, and the community

Where to find help • Check grades and attendance in the Parent Portal together with your child until they develop the habit and do it independently • Progress Reports-delivered during 4th week of grading period • Report Cards- delivered at the end of 6 weeks grading period • Teachers are the best resource to help you understand what is happening in the classroom. Grades, habits, classroom behavior. Communicate with teachers via email and voicemail. • Check teachers websites. Many have helpful resources. All have tutorials before or after school

PSAT • All 10th and 11th graders took the PSAT Oct 15th 2015 • Score reports will be emailed home mid December • Individualized score reports will provide students with an understanding of which skills they should work on and connects them to free personalized SAT study guides, a personality profile that suggests majors and careers to explore, and a list of AP classes they show potential for • PSAT score determines eligibility for ACC dual credit program. The score that is needed is TBD

  8. PSAT Interpretation sessions Please make sure to print out your score report and bring it with you to the session. Tuesday, January 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria- suitable for parents & students Wednesday, January 27th during both lunches- session is for students in VCRoom Thursday, January 28th (Late Start) at 9:30 a.m. – session is for students in VCRoom

  12. Endorsement Options • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) • Business and Industry • Arts and Humanities • Public Services • Multidisciplinary Studies ** Each Endorsement has specific graduation requirements indicated on the back of the credit check**

  13. What do colleges look for? • Class Rank and GPA • Rigorous/balanced High School curriculum • ACT and SAT scores • Long-term involvement in extra-curricular and community activities community service • Good (short) Essays- go to essay workshops in college/career center senior year

  14. Dual Credit vs. AP Courses • Dual credit classes are taught by ACC professors either at Bowie or at an ACC campus. Upon successful completion of the class, students earn both college and high school credit • AP classes are taught by teachers at Bowie using College Board curriculum. Upon completion of the class AND a grade of 3+ on the AP test in May, students have the potentially to earn college credit (some colleges only accept 4’s and 5’s) • Both dual credit and AP classes are graded on a 5.0 scale • Check with out of state schools for dual credit transfer

  15. ACC Early College Start Information • High School students can earn college credit for free! • Courses are taught by ACC professors on the Bowie campus. Students can also travel to ACC campuses and take classes there (if schedule allows) • Courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale • Students are responsible for ordering transcripts after course completion to be sent to Bowie Registrar • Parents and counselors can not see grades. Students have to be responsible, self starters and have good time management skills • ACC representative will be here in the spring • All 10th graders will attend ACC info session in spring Step 1 – In February, Students attend orientation session in college/career center and begin enrollment process Current ACC dual credit courses offered at Bowie: US History, English IV, Government, Speech, and Psychology
