Disaster Risk Reduction Using Informal Education Strategies

This study evaluates informal education strategies for disaster risk reduction in public institutions, focusing on schools, health institutions, and welfare facilities in Italy, Portugal, and Iceland. The research includes survey findings assessing the dissemination of preventive measures and the level of preparedness across the institutions. The study also examines educational initiatives, earthquake drills, emergency plans, and available equipment for responding to earthquakes and eruptions.

Informal Education Evaluated • Evaluated by measuring information on risk reduction within public institution (prevention and preparedness) • Main focus on schools in Italy, Portugal and Iceland • Health and welfare institutions included in Iceland • Hospitals • Old people homes • Homes for people with disabilities • Survey used as a measurement tool

Questionnaire • Developed by H task members • Tested in Hveragerði • The local administration • The elementary school (age 6-16) • The playschool “Undraland” (age 1-5) • The playschool “Óskaland” (age 1-5) • The elderly peoples’ home “Ás” • The home “Birkimörk” for people with disabilities • Presented at a meeting in Naples in January 2013

  8. The Icelandic Survey • Information with names of institutions, directors and e-mail accounts received from: • Ministry of Education • Ministry of Welfare • The Association of Local Authorities in Iceland • Local Authorities: Representatives of Social Affairs

  9. The Icelandic Survey continued • Survey sent to 477 institutions • Sent to every school located in an earthquake zone (i.e. not including schools in East- and Westfjords. • 255 institutions have responded • 53.4% answering rate
