Circle book Reading Quiz #1  Put your NAME and THE PERIOD on your sheet of paper • Summarize what the rules of your society are, who the main character is, and what is something they are worried about/might have to overcome? • Write ONE piece of evidence from your book down and complete ONE of the following phrases (make a prediction): • What if…? • If only… • If this goes on…

Article: “Why we need dystopian stories like ‘the hunger games’” • Cut out and glue in article to your next page in your LITERATURE CIRCLE SECTION (after the short story from last time) • Number the paragraphs (there are 7) • Read and highlight the article for the Essential Question: Why are we so attracted to dystopian stories? What do they tell us about our own societies and ourselves? • On the same page or on the next page: Write three sentencesanswering the essential question with one piece of evidencethat you highlighted.  **THERE WILL BE A QUIZ ON THIS ARTICLE NEXT CLASS**

Article: “Thoreau Still Beckons, IF I can Take my Laptop” REMINDER: Thoreau – “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience” Emerson– “Nature” and “Self Reliance” WITH A PARTNER – Read & Highlight as you read the article important ideas that she gives for why Thoreau is WRONG in his beliefs in “Walden.” THEN ANSWER THE FOLLOWING underneath of your article. • What are the benefits of technology for this author? • What does she say are Thoreau’s main ideas in the essay “Walden”? • How does she challenge his ideas? What does she say are the reasons for why his ideas are NOT completely realistic for our society?

(page 160ish) • Monday there will be another grammar practice and quiz. (Please look over your notes) • Review the Emerson and Thoreau ideas that we started with this semester. These will be crucial to your assessment.
