  2. WORDS WITH SILENT LETTERS • Many of our words come from the Old English language. • Some of these words have silent letters such as g, k, w. • Examples: • gnat, gnome, knee, knot, write, wrist

  3. NOT SO SILENT! • Today, these words have silent letters, but “back in the day,” all the letters were pronounced! • Just for fun…read these words pronouncing all the letter sounds: • gnat, gnome, knee, knot, write, wrist “Mom! I fell down and hurt my knee!”

  4. TRIGRAPH igh • TRI = 3 (A tricycle has 3 wheels) • When we see 3 letters together making only 1 sound, we call it a tri graph. • Tri graph ighmakes the long (I) sound. Examples: light, right, fight, high, knight

  5. SPELLING WORDS • gnat bright • gnome brightness • gnash fright • knife light • knock lighthouse • kneel night • wrist nightlight • wreck plight • wreath slight • write starlight
