VOWEL SUFFIX -ed Vowel suffix –ed is a tricky suffix! It actually makes 3 different sounds, depending on the base word. Sometimes it sounds like “ed” Sometimes it sounds like “d” Sometimes it sounds like “t”
Vowel Suffix -ed = “ed” When you add vowel suffix to a base word which has a FINAL sound of (d) or (t)…. Then suffix –ed sounds like “ed” act + ed = acted divide + ed = divided
Vowel Suffix –ed = “d” When you add vowel suffix –ed to a base word which has a VOICED FINAL sound (other than d)… Then suffix –ed sounds like “d” tag+ ed = tagged (g = voiced) allow + ed = allowed (ow = voiced) spell + ed = spelled (l = voiced)
Vowel Suffix –ed = “t” When you add vowel suffix –ed to a base word which has an UNVOICED FINAL CONSONANT sound (other than t)… Then suffix –ed sounds like “t” miss + ed = missed (s = unvoiced) help + ed = helped (p = unvoiced) cook + ed = cooked (k = unvoiced)
