Inspiring careers in food and drink • SFDF is the representative body of food and drink manufacturers in Scotland. • One of SFDF’s strategic priorities is to enhance the competitiveness of the industry • A key strand of this is to promote the industry as a career destination of choice • To deliver this, we have received funding for A Future in Food and the newly established food and drink skills ambassador network

  2. A Future in Food: Aims & Objectives Promote the food and drink industry as a “Career Destination of Choice” Demonstrate industry relevance over a broad range of subjects. Make connections between what pupils are learning in school; qualifications and skills; employment opportunities and career pathways. Inspire pupils to make connections between the food on their plates and employment in the food and drink industry.

A Future in Food: How it works SFDF brokers partnerships to encourage industry into schools and schools into industry To date A Future in Food has delivered: Unique partnerships, delivered across Scotland Different approaches used in each partnership Industry scenarios used to set scene Link with a range of industry and other partners

A Future in Food - Some Examples Devro – Chryston Secondary School Macphie of Glenbervie – Auchenblae Primary Stag Bakeries – cluster of local secondary schools on the Island of Lewis Edrington Group – two local secondary school University of Abertay – supporting local schools and industry clusters

  6. Our ‘Milky Twist’ journeyBy the S3 Enterprise and Employability class at Eastbank Academy, Glasgow

  7. We are studying for a National Progression Award in Enterprise and Employability

  8. We visited a farm to find out how milk was produced

  9. There were some downsides…………..

  10. We also visited Wiseman’s Dairy at Bellshill We learnt: The skills you need to work there What jobs are available How milk gets from the dairy to your fridge

  11. We learnt from one of the best in the business: Barry Cuthbertson, Wiseman’s Sales and Marketing Manager

  12. Barry taught us about identifying our target market and market research

  14. We made a smoothie, with ice-cream and fruit At the moment we are using blueberries but the fruit can be adjusted depending on seasonal availability

  16. How we came up with a marketing strategy

  17. First of all we needed a logo

  18. Then some promotional material…..

  19. We sold the product to our class mates, to parents and to our teachers

  20. Even Mr Shaw, the Headteacher liked it!!!

  21. And a very important person came to visit us and even bought a smoothie!!

  22. Now we have Government endorsement, we are hoping to raise more money for our charities: Help the Heroes and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice

Evaluation • Don’t be nervous, have a go at being involved …benefits outweigh any risk • Discover what the school needs…play to their strengths • Offer your time and get involved in planning…for the experience to be real…get your hands dirty! • Shared ownership….SFDF, ORG, but mostly THE CHILDREN. • Sustain involvement…..
