Introduction As the world-wide rates of cardiovascular diseases continue to soar, there is a growing focus on prevention and management of risk factors. Previous studies conducted here in the Strassburger Lipid Center have shown the positive effect of the 9-cis b-carotene rich Dunaliella powder on plasma lipid profile in humans, and it’s efficacy in reducing atherogenesis and fatty liver formation in mice. The aim of this study is to learn about the conjoined effect of Fish oil and 9-cis b-carotene rich Dunaliella powder on the plasma lipid profile and the subsequent development of atherosclerosis and fatty liver formation. Dunaliella Control
Methods In-vivo models in LDL-/- mice, subjected to 6 different nutritional supplementationunder a high fat western diet. 1. Control (high fat only) 4. High fat and fish oil 2. High fat and olive oil 5. High fat, Dunaliella and olive oil 3. High fat and Dunaliella 6. High fat, Dunaliella and fish oil Heart, liver, blood and fat tissues were collected from the mice and further analyzed. Data collecting techniques: • Plasma lipid profile analysis in HPLC and FPLC. • Comparative assessment of the tissue slices showing atherosclerotic lesions in the aortic sinus and fatty liver development. • Fat and liver tissue level measurement of Omega-3 using gas chromatography and b-carotene using HPLC. • Inflammatory gene mRNA levels using Real-time PCR.
