Global Health • “Global health, in general, implies consideration of the health needs of the people of the whole planet above the concerns of particular nations.” -WHO • “Global health looks to foster social development to achieve optimal health by highlighting the socioeconomic, environmental and cultural factors of the causes of different diseases that transcend national borders, class, race, ethnicity and cultural divisions.” -CFHI • “Global health is an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasises transnational health issues, deter- minants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes inter- disciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population- based prevention with individual-level clinical care.” -The Lancet

Programs in: Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, India, and South Africa • More than 20 sites • Available for students of all levels interested in Global Health and older than 20 years of age • Broad area of interest addressed • A limited amount of scholarships are awarded to help cover part of the costs. • Costs range from $ 2,345 -$2,575 + airfare Rolling applications which are accepted year round It is recommended that students apply at least 3 months prior to desired date. Each program begins the first Saturday of each month, and last for 4 weeks. (June 2 or June 30)

5. Student Training Programs
Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program • Eight week, professional development program for racial and ethnic minority graduate students with an interest in Public Health research and/or intervention at the CDC • The fellowship's rigorous program engages fellows in an emerging infectious disease. • Students gain research experience in infectious diseases research areas such as antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, animal related diseases, hospital related infectious issues, etc. • Date: 8 weeks June-July • Location: CDC headquarters in Atlanta • Stipend: $4,000, housing and airfare provided • Application deadline: February 2012 • Additional information: http://www.minorityhealth.org/p-student-drjames.php

Internships • Dates: 6 – 12 week programs during the months of May – October • Location: WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland • Application period: December 1 – January 31 • Internships are not paid. 7. USAID Global Health Fellows program • USAID is a federal government agency that supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances US foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth; agriculture and trade; global health; and democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance. • Fellows will have the opportunity to gain practical experience by working closely with global health professionals on vital projects that impact lives in the developing world. • Positions in Washington D.C. are in: • Office of the Assistant Administrator • Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition • Office of HIV/AIDS • Office of Population and Reproductive Health • Positions in Kampala, Uganda are related to HIV/AIDS in: • Mengo Hospital • The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) • The Meeting Point

9. Elective Africa • This is a practical hands-on experience, under supervision focused on the integration of knowledge acquired by the students in various sections of their learning process such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, community health, pharmacology, general and systemic pathology, hematology, immunology and clinical Chemistry. • Students will be placed in different hospitals under the guidance of two separate mentors and will rotate through different medical specialties such as pediatrics and OB-GYN, the student may also be allowed to observe and assist in various general and orthopedic surgeries, under supervision. • Dates: June 4-30 or July 2-28 • Location: Kenya, Tanzania or Malawi • Costs: $1,950 (food and accomodation included) + airfare • Additional information: http://www.electiveafrica.com/programs/junior_medical_students

10. 15. Unite for SightGlobal Impact Corps • Cutting-edge grassroots global health delivery programs in Ghana, Honduras and India. • Students will be working in eye clinics alongside local doctors delivering eye care to rural areas in local communities. 16. HAITI Medical Mission Trips • IniciativaComunitaria, offers missions trips to our neighboring island of Haiti. 18. National Institutes of HealthSummer Research Opportunity • Students work at the NIH Clinical Center, which is the nation’s largest hospital devoted completely to clinical research. Students will work with mentors, participate in NIH Research Poster Festival, and attend weekly lectures hosted by NIH researchers. • Date: 8 week duration, working a minimum of 40 hours. 19. AMSA-VITAS End of Life Education Fellowship Program • Six-week intensive summer experience designed to introduce medical students to end of life (EOL) care issues. Program has a combination of didactic sessions and a variety of field placements that combines in-patient and home visits. • Students will have the opportunity to learn from interdisciplinary hospice team members which may consist of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, and volunteers. • Date: June 13-July • Location: Ft.
