MCP2551 High Speed CAN Transceiver Market Introduction Sales Training August, 2002
Agenda • Brief technical overview • ISO11898 • Introducing the MCP2551 • Features, competitive comparison, advantages • Whole product support
CAN Physical Layers • Any physical layer can be used providing they are compatible with the CAN specification • Recessive and dominant states defined per CAN spec • Examples: • Balanced 2-wire • Fiber Optical • 1-wire • Open collector • The most popular is the balanced 2-wire (differential) implementation
What is ISO11898? • ISO 11898 is an international standard that includes the CAN protocol specification PLUS the balanced 2-wire physical layer specification • ISO 11898 rigidly defines the physical layer characteristics (Vdd range, diff bus voltage requirements, max speed for various cable lengths, short circuit tolerance, etc.) • Many industrial and automotive applications require an ISO 11898 compatible CAN transceiver • The MCP2551 CAN transceiver is ISO 11898 compatible (see table later in this presentation)
MCP MCP MCP CAN Controller CAN Controller MCU A/D PWM I/O CAN XCVR 2551 2551 2551 CAN Bus MCP2551 High Speed CAN Transceiver • Provides physical interface between node functionality and CAN bus • Supports 1Mbps maximum CAN bus speeds CAN functionality can implemented on MCU or on separate devices A transceiver is almost always required on every node
MCP2551 Key Features • Industry-standard 8-pin footprint • Balanced output drivers for low EMI • High speed, slope control, and standby modes • Power-on-Reset and Brown-Out Detection • CAN bus drivers remain high impedance during POR and brown-out • Very robust • Permanent dominant detection on TxD • Drivers disable on extended transmitter input • CAN bus continuous short circuit protection of ±40 V • Will withstand voltage transients up to ±250 V • Automatic thermal shutdown protection
High Speed CAN Transceiver Spec Comparison • The last three parts on this list do not meet minimum ISO11898 requirements
MCP2551 Competitive Advantages • Withstands widest range of continuous short circuit voltage among ISO11898 transceivers • -40V to +40V with no time limit • Withstands widest range of transient voltages • -250V to +250V per ISO7637 specification • Permanent dominant detection • Prevent stuck node from taking all network bandwidth • Only one competitor offers this feature
Competitive Advantages (con’t) • Better ESD protection than virtually all ISO11898 compatible transceivers • Very short propagation delay in Slope Control (SC) mode • The MCP2551 can run CAN bus speeds 250k in slope control mode and competitor cannot
Additional Competitive Information • EMI output generated is as low as major competitor’s device • Testing done internally per J1752/3 specification • The MCP2551 is a robust alternative to current CAN transceivers in the market today!
