  5. Haiku Traits • Three lines that do not rhyme • Follows the 5-7-5 syllable model • Traditionally incorporates nature/the seasons • Include imagery that should paint a mental image in the reader’s mind

  7. Haiku History • Originated in Japan as hokku • Renga were linked poems composed and performed as a live competition of wits • Hokku were the opening lines of renga • The named changed to haiku because hokku means “starting verse” in a linked poem

  10. Haiku Advice • Make every word count! • Leave the reader thinking beyond the poem. • Use few adjectives and avoid conjunctions. • Express your ideas through nature.
