Preferential Option for the Poor means: • Looking at unfair situations from the perspective of those who are suffering from the injustice • Giving priority to the needs of those who do not have the basics rather than the wants of those who already have the basics
What are some ways that people can be poor? (think of the spies) • Spiritually poor – lack a connection with God • Physically poor – people with physical disabilities or limitations, lack financial resources, addictions • Intellectually poor – people with learning disabilities • Emotionally poor – low self esteem, depressed • Socially poor – people who are excluded
Homosexuality – Fact or Myth? • You can tell if someone is homosexual by looking at them • Homosexuality is a preference for the same sex, not a hatred of the opposite sex • People who have homosexual dreams are gay • Children who experiment with same-sex play are gay • Most homosexuals are dangerous • Homosexuality is hereditary • Homosexual women really want to be men • Jokes about gay people make people more likely to become straight • Gay people can be good parents for a child • The Catholic Church condemns homosexuals • A person who isn’t interested in dating by the time he/she is in college is gay • All homosexuals act like a member of the opposite sex
Facts to Consider about Teens who are Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual • 78% - report being verbally abused • 38% - are physically threatened • 21% - are punched, kicked or beaten • 50% - are rejected by their families • 80% - have severe feelings of isolation • 28% - drop out of school • 40% - of street youth identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual
Same Sex Terminology • Gender Identity – convinced that one is female or male • Gender/Sex Roles – the behaviour expected of males and females in a specific cultural setting • Sexual Orientation – emotional and physical attraction that a person feels for the other sex, or the same sex, or both • Heterosexuality – sexual orientation in which one gender has physical and emotional affectionate feelings towards the other sex • Homosexuality – sexual orientation in which a person has physical and emotional affectionate feelings toward a person of the same sex • Gay – characteristic of male homosexuality • Lesbian – characteristic of female homosexuality • Homophobia – irrational fear of homosexuality
Church’s Teaching On Homosexuality • The homosexual person, like the heterosexual person, is made in the image of God • The homosexual person, like the heterosexual person, is loved by God • The men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies do not choose their homosexuality. For most of them it is a trial. • All people are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives. Like all Christians, they are called to confront life difficulties in light of the way Christ suffered on the cross.
Church’s Teaching on Homosexuality • There is nothing wrong with homosexual tendencies and attractions • All persons, both homosexual and heterosexual, are called to chastity • Homosexuals must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.
