A third year student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, this young man is pursuing a triple major in Chemistry, Mathematics and Spanish and maintains a perfect 4.0 grade average. His goal is to become a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. A highly regarded tutor of struggling students at the University’s Learning Enhancement Center, he is valued as much for who he is as a human being as for who he is as a scholar.His name is Patrick Smollen

For the past 12 years of his life, competitive swimming has been his passion. Last year he put this passion to good work organizing a swim-a-thon to raise money for the Flying Eye Hospital in India. The event raised £2,000 to build a vision center which will be used to treat hundreds of patients and to provide a site to train doctors and medical personnel. He has received early acceptance at Harvard University where he plans to pursue International Studies and Economics. His name is David Benjamin Lynch
She was afflicted with Encephalitis at age three. She has undergone years of speech and physical therapy and must take medication to control seizures. Despite reading comprehension difficulties and slow reading speed she has persevered and maintains a 3.5 GPA. She is the Features Editor of her school newspaper which provides local and global news to the international student body. In high school when her adopted baby brother was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder, she witnessed first hand the work and the accomplishments brought about by his Pediatric Neurologist. Later, in her undergraduate work at Washington she began to focus on children with Autism. With this in mind, in August she will begin an 8 year journey to become a Pediatric Neurologist and be able to both practice medicine and carry out research in this field.Her name is Carolyn Coughlan

A student majoring in Chinese Studies at Sheffield University, he spent his year abroad at Nanjing University in China. His dedication to perfecting his Chinese language skills is shown by his decision to move out of the foreign students housing building and live with 2 Chinese students. During school breaks he travelled across China to villages and towns to meet people and learn about the diverse Chinese culture.
