Stalingrad, 1942 • Germany breaks non-aggression pact • Germany invades Soviet Union; blitzkrieg (lightning war) • Want Stalingrad, an industrial city • Bloodiest battle of the war • Germany can’t beat the Russian winter; Soviets hold • Germany surrenders and is pushed back • Turning point!!!
North Africa: Operation Torch • Important for control of Mediterranean Sea (shipping) • Germany led by Erwin Rommel- “Desert Fox” • Back and forth fighting • America joins the war, and Dwight D. Eisenhower leads U.S troops in Africa • Allied Victory • Stalin wants a second front in Europe to help his army out, but such an invasion would take at least a year to plan
Operation Overlord (D-Day) • Careful planning to choose invasion location : Normandy • Led by Eisenhower • June 6, 1944- Allied troops invade France • Airborne attack at midnight: men parachute behind German lines • Amphibious attack in the morning ( largest in history) • 160,000 troops, 12,000 planes, 7,000 landing vessels • Strong German defenses: bunkers, mines, long-range artillery, walls, barbed wire • High casualty rate, but an overall success • Took Paris by August
Island Hopping Campaign • Go from island to island across the Pacific until Japan is reached • Amphibious landings • Cut Japan off from supply routes
The Philippines • General MacArthur led American and Filipino troops • Defense position on the Bataan peninsula, but running out of food and supplies. Not granted reinforcements • MacArthur order to leave; “I shall return.” • The rest are forced to surrender

Battle at Midway, June 3-6, 1942 • U.S broke Japanese code and knew their plan to attack Midway on June 3 • Admiral Nimitz carefully placed aircraft carriers to await Japanese air attacks • Allies could gauge each Japanese move • Turning Point: halted Japanese advance and greatly destroyed their fleet
Iwo Jima, Feb. 1945 • First time attacking a Japanese island • Well fortified with bunkers and underground tunnels • Heavy fighting; Japanese fought to the death • Famous for the flag-raising photo
