  1. Sermon on the Mount Mt 5: 33-37 Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

  2. Mt 5: 33-37 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

  3. Traditional Righteousness • Vicious Cycle • Transforming Initiative

  4. Lev 19:12 – Do not swear falsely by my name Exod 20:7 – you shall not take the name of Lord your God in vain Dt 23:22 – when you make a vow to Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it.

  5. Verse 33: “oaths” – truth in what you say. “vows” – promises.

  6. Four aspects of an oath • Formal declaration of an oath • Acknowledgement that oath is made in God’s presence • God is called up to witness • God to avenge any lie.

  7. 16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. Mt 23:16ff

  8. Heaven is God’s throne • Earth is His footstool • Jerusalem is God’s city • Even the colour of head (ie. Growing old) is God’s

  9. John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  11. When are you most likely to speak half truths? To spin? What are you trying to avoid? What would it be like to let you speech be simple and truthful? What might happen? What would you feel?
