4. Google Classroom • This year our class will be using google classroom. Your student will join the class during the first week. • The following will be available to students through google classroom: • Notes • Homework Assignments • Important Documents • Resources • Quizzes • Discussions

5. Open Up Resources • Deer Valley Unified School district adopted a new resource to guide your learning through the 8thgrade Math Standards called Open Up or many people say Illustrative Mathematics. • According to the Illustrative Mathematics website, Illustrative Mathematics provides “high-quality educational resources for teachers and students to know, use, and enjoy mathematics. [It] provides comprehensive math curriculum, tasks, lesson plans, professional services and a format for engaging mathematical discussion.” (https://www.illustrativemathematics.org/)

6. Grade Weights • 60%: Mid and End of Unit Assessments (No Retakes Allowed) • 35%: Topic Quizzes (Refer to Retake Policy) • 5%: Homework and Binder Checks

7. Homework Policy • Homework is assigned nightly, is designed to reinforce concepts discussed in class, and provides you a chance to practice the necessary skills. It is extremely important for you to complete all your homework by the due date. Homework will be graded for completion. Homework will be assigned on Google Classroom where answers will be submitted. In order to receive full credit, all work must be shown in student’s math binder which will be checked by the teacher on a regular basis. Answers only will not be accepted. • All homework assignments need to be completed prior to the topic quiz to receive full credit. Homework assignments will not be accepted after the topic quiz for those assignments and will be entered into Power School as a zero.

8. Retake Policy • Students may retake topic quizzes once within 2 weeks of being entered into Power School. • Retakes will be given during tutoring/RTI. The higher score of the two will be entered in the gradebook. • Students must complete the following to be eligible to retake the topic quizzes: • · All homework must have been completed and turned in before the original topic quiz. • · Complete Test corrections: Using a different color pen correct all missed questions and explain the original mistake. • Mid Unit Assessments & End Unit Assessments may not be retaken.

9. Tutoring • Every week the schedule for the following weeks tutoring will be posted in the classroom, sent out in the weekly email and on the class calendar. • RTI Time

12. What is RTI? • RTI Stands for Response to Intervention • This is used to title “Homeroom” • In RTI we: • Classroom Meetings • Extra help-teacher may pull student or student may ask on their own

13. Discipline • General Rule: Warning>Detention>Referral • Every infraction is different Ex. Gum v. Defiance • Detentions are held after school. A form will go home for parent signature with either a phone call or email. • If a student is interfering with the learning of other students, they may be asked to leave the room and fill out a ‘Think Sheet’. This will go home for a parent signature.

14. Dress Code • Clothing must cover the entire buttocks. Shirts and tops may not expose bare midriffs, bare shoulders, nor be deeply or narrowly cut in the front, back, or under the arms. Halter tops, spaghetti straps, and strapless tops are not acceptable. Clothing that exposes undergarments will not be tolerated for males or females. • No hats may be worn inside any campus buildings at anytime, except for properly approved occupational safety headgear required for special classes. • Defamatory writing, obscene language or symbols, or symbols of drugs, sex, or alcohol on clothing or jewelry are expressly prohibited. • Bare feet are never acceptable. In the interest of safety, shoes must be worn at all times. Closed shoes are to be worn for any type of physical activity, such as physical education, cheer practice, weight lifting, etc. • Shorts must entirely cover the buttocks.

15. Electronic Devices • We are allowing cell phones again this year with the following understandings: • They are not being used without teacher approval. • They do no destractfrom/disturb the learning environment during class. • They are not used to cheat on tests/quizzes. • Deer Valley Unified School District does not assume any liability if a device is stolen or broken while at school. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t afford to lose it, don’t bring it to school. • Teachers may, at any time, revoke electronic device privileges if any of the above conditions are broken.

16. Questions • If a student has a question or issue with grades, classroom procedures, assignments, etc., we encourage them to speak with the teacher first. • If the question or issue is not resolved, we encourage parents and students to contact the teacher. (E-mail is the easiest to answer during the day, but the phone works, as well) • We always encourage open communication between school and home! Please come to your child’s teacher first.
